Life in Prague

Image Since early days, Prague has always played an important role in the history of the Czech Nation, the region and Europe. Prague is thus the perfect place for your education exchange because it blends history with contemporary life like no other city.

Prague is often called "the golden city" or "the city of a hundred spires." Charles the IV made Prague the crown jewel of Europe when he became Holy Roman Emperor. He embarked an abuitious building spree which resulted in the famous Charles Bridge and the founding of Charles University, the oldest university in central Europe. Later Prague became an important seat in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After the First World War, Prague became the capitol of the new independent Czechoslovakia, lead by President Masaryk, who modernized the city by adopting the newest architectural styles of Cubism and Art Nouveau. Prague is an architectural gem because it was never bombed during World War II and the communists thankfully did not destroy the city center. Today Prague is a cosmopolitan city which boasts a unique, preserved atmosphere. The city, especially the central areas of Stare Mesto (Old Town), Josefov (originally the Jewish Quarter), Nove Mesto (New Town), Mala Strana, Hradcany (the Castle district) and Vysehrad are a treasure trove of historically important buildings. Prague has the world's largest working castle, which history sometimes clashes with modern politics.

Prague is a fascinating mix of old and new, a city where bagels are served alongside Czech beer and where multiplexes show locally produced films. A city tour will give students their bearings. We will also visit a traditional Czech pub, hear a performance of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, and take trips outside of Prague. After classes, you will have time to explore and experience Prague on your own. You won't be bored because Prague offers a myriad of cultural and recreational activities. Wandering the streets of Stare Mesto, attending a performance at the National Theatre, sampling international cuisine, checking out local clubs and pubs and listening to jazz are just some of the things you can try in Prague.

Prague is not just a destination unto itself. It is also a great base from which to explore other places- not just villages, spas and castles of the Czech Republic, but surrounding countries as well. Indeed, Berlin, Vienna, Budapest and Bratislava are just a few hours away by train. We hope that you will be able to spend some time visiting the region as well as attending the institute.
