Prague Summer Schools: The Prague Castle

Prague Castle is considered one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Every year, around 1.8 million people visit to admire its magnificent structures. According to the Guinness Book of Records, it holds the title of the largest ancient castle in the world, covering nearly 70,000 square meters (750,000 square feet). The castle stretches approximately 570 meters (1,870 feet) in length and averages 130 meters (430 feet) in width.

It dates back to the 9th century. Over its 1,100-year history, it has been the seat of Czech kings, emperors, and now the president of the Czech Republic (currently the president lives here with his wife). Its architectural styles reflect the changing times, blending Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements.

The castle complex includes the Old Royal Palace, featuring Vladislav Hall with its stunning Gothic vaulting, and St. Vitus Cathedral, a magnificent Gothic masterpiece, where Czech kings were crowned and buried. St. George’s Basilica represents Romanesque architecture, while Golden Lane offers charming 16th-century houses. The Royal Garden and Rosenberg Palace highlight Renaissance influences, while the Summer Palace showcases early Baroque elegance.

Each year, students attending Prague Summer Schools begin their experience with a tour of the city, which includes a visit to Prague Castle. Visitors can enter St. Vitus Cathedral for free (except during mass) and explore the castle’s outdoor areas. The changing of the guards is a popular spectacle in the castle grounds. There’s also a stunning viewpoint above the castle where you can capture photos of Prague’s old town, with a nearby Starbucks offering refreshments. In their free time, students can explore various exhibitions and tours in the castle’s buildings, many of which focus on the castle’s history and the reign of Charles IV in Czechia.
